Conservative Changes to Immigration Reckless and Discriminatory

POSTED ON DECEMBER 14, 2012
WINNIPEG– Liberal Citizenship and Immigration critic Kevin Lamoureux made the following statement today on the Conservative government’s changes to Canada’s asylum system:
“Today’s announcement of safe designated countries of origin is a continuation of Minister Jason Kenney’s immigration policies that support an intolerant and anti-refugee culture in Canada. His repeated labelling of refugee claims from certain countries as ‘bogus’ is prejudicial, reckless and a politicization of the process based on Conservative ideology.
Liberals recognize that giving the Minister the sole discretionary power to determine a ‘safe country-of-origin’ is dangerous, which is why we called for an oversight committee. Unfortunately, this proposal was rejected outright by the Harper Conservatives.
From Conservative cuts to refugee care to today’s announcement, Minister Kenney and this Conservative government continue to undermine Canada’s compassionate and humanitarian immigration system. Liberals believe in reforming the system so that processing times are fair and reasonable for refugees. This new proposed system, however, will lead to far more mistakes in the asylum process and possibly send refugee claimants back to persecution in their home countries.”
